The Wasmer Game

CHUCK KYLE'S '69 FINAL REGULAR SEASON GAME

On Friday, October 21, 2022, Saint Ignatius High School hosted the first varsity football game at Wasmer Field in Ohio City. The game was to honor legendary football coach Chuck 'Chico' Kyle '69.

Nearly 4,000 people packed into Wasmer Field on that beautiful Friday afternoon. Temporary bleachers were placed along the Gabor Track to accommodate those in attendance. A temporary sound system was put in place as well for the game.

To begin the evening, coach Kyle would receive a proclamation from the city of Cleveland. Cleveland City Councilman Kerry McCormack presented that at midfield before kick-off. Athletic Director Rory Fitzpatrick '88 would also read a letter written to coach Kyle by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

The Wildcats hosted Football North-Clarkson (ONT) in the final game of the 2022 regular season. The Football Cats would hold on to defeat Football North, 10-7. It was a defensive battle between the two programs, with the game-winning kick coming from Thomas Kilbane in the early stages of the third quarter.

Football North attempted a 52-yard field goal to tie the game at 10. However, senior Brandon Webster blocked the attempted kick that would seal the victory for the Wildcats.

The victory marked coach Kyle's 375th victory in his 40 years as Head Football Coach.

With junior quarterback Joshua Papesh and the offense in Victory Formation, time would expire and those in attendance walked onto Wasmer Field. The team, coaches and Saint Ignatius faithful gathered around the marching band to sing the Alma Mater.

Coach Kyle would address those who attended the game and take a group photo with the alums he coached throughout the years at the 50-yard line.
