Theo Kudlo and Austin Zeleznik celebrate after combining for the second goal of the game.

The Saint Ignatius varsity soccer team defeated the Avon Lake Shoremen on Friday night, 3-0, to open the 2018 season.

The Wildcats played exceptionally well and have high hopes for the upcoming season.

Matt McLaughlin lead Saint Ignatius with two goals. His first goal came in the first two minutes off a rebound, starting the season off on a bright note.

The second tally of the evening came from a beautiful header by Austin Zeleznik off a great cross by Theo Kudlo. Kory Nekoloff made the play possible by keeping the ball in play following a long through ball. Kudlo then worked his magic with a brilliant fake before crossing it to Zeleznik.

The third and final goal of the contest came thanks to another great play by McLaughlin later in the first.

The other Wildcats did their part with great movement with and off the ball. The team almost stretched the advantage further in the second half but barely missed on some promising chances.

The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday, hosting the Twinsburg Tigers on Wasmer Field at 7 pm.

JV Cats start strong

The JV B boys will start the season on Tuesday at Eastlake North. The boys of Anthony Fior '02 and John Rowell '11 won their scrimmages against Medina, 2-0, and Hudson, 8-0.
