After sitting through a weather delay in Columbus on Friday evening, the Saint Ignatius varsity track and field team soldiered on in the 2018 OHSAA Division I State Track & Field Tournament.

The Wildcats experienced some good results, and some tough ones, in a stacked field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at The Ohio State University.

As per usual, Phil Zuccaro shined brightly for the Wildcats. The senior qualified for finals tomorrow in the 200m dash with a sterling time of 22.11 to place him eighth among 15 competitors in the prelims. Zuccaro will look to score points in the event at 6:15 pm for the Cats.

Zuccaro barely missed on qualifying for the 100m dash, too. The senior's sprint of 10.92 missed the cut by just .06.

However, Zuccaro worked with the 4x100 relay team well to give the Cats a big boost. The squad, composed of Connor & Jack Kennedy, Dominic Devengencie, and Zuccaro clocked in at 42.52 in the quick event, finishing eighth amongst 18 very talented teams. The team will race tomorrow at 5:30 pm.

After qualifying for States for the second year in a row, John Wetula fell short of securing a spot in finals in the 110m hurdles. The junior ran a time of 14.72, placing him 12th in a field of 18 talented runners. Wetula will look to come back next year for a third time in a row.

In the lone finals race of the day, the Wildcats' 4x800 relay squad battled hard. Nick Saul, Matt Blouch, Andrew Biehl, and Liam McGuire galloped to a time of 8:02.16, placing them in 15th in the state. The finish did not earn the Cats any points, but the quartet has plenty to be proud of for working to qualify for States.

The Wildcats will return to OSU tomorrow, thankfully with some better weather. Darian Kinnard and Tommy Eichenberg will kick the day off with shot put at noon.
