The Varsity Baseball Cats start fast versus Benedictine on Friday evening before the game is called because of lightning and rain

Berea, Ohio - Following the mandatory 20-minute wait after lightning was sited in the top of the second inning, the umpires met with both head coaches and determined that Friday'sgame would be called if the rain persisted, which it did.

The 5 PM first pitch was called shortly after  5:50 with Saint Ignatius holding a 3-0 lead over Benedictine at Baldwin Wallace University's Fisher Field

Although it was a short stint, junior Sean Wracher, who has received an offer from Penn State as an outstanding long snapper in football, was solid in what was his first Varsity start. In the top of the second inning, Sean knocked down an authoritative line drive back to the mound, calmly picked up the ball and threw to first to complete the 1-3 out.

The Wildcats swung the bats with authority in the bottom of the first inning en route to their three runs.

Gifted table-setting junior second baseman AJ Gaich, who will be visiting St. Bonaventure this coming week, led off with a Baltimore Chop that he beat out for a base hit. One of the hottest hitters in Northeast Ohio, senior right fielder Jack Eyink, followed with an RBI triple that he laced to the gap in right-center field.

Jack, who has committed to the University of Cincinnati on a baseball scholarship, also made a nice over-the-shoulder catch in deep right field in the top of the first inning.

The 'Cats' strong first inning included an RBI sacrifice fly by junior outfielder/third baseman and Nebraska recruit Michael Holdsworth, a two-out walk drawn by senior co-Captain Tommy Grosel, a base hit to right field from junior Matt Ferritto, and a run-scoring, line-drive single to right-center field off the bat of junior Leo Eyink, Jack's brother.

The Wildcats will now focus on tomorrow's (Saturday) annual Ohio Jesuit Tournament, which this year is being hosted by Toledo St. John's Jesuit. The 'Cats will face the Queen City Bombers from St. Xavier on Saturday at approximately 2:30 PM and, after the traditional OJT Mass and Breakfast on Sunday, Saint Ignatius will take on either Walsh Jesuit or St. John's Jesuit at high noon.

Have a wonderful weekend and we will see you in "The Glass City" tomorrow and Sunday.
