Few freshmen swimmers roar onto the scene at Saint Ignatius High School, but Tyler Hong is a rare talent.

Following in the footsteps of Marcus and Nick Hong, Tyler has demonstrated incredible ability in his first year with the Saint Ignatius swimming and diving squad.

As a result, Tyler is the student-athlete of the week.

Last weekend, Hong shined brightly at the prestigious National Catholic Championships in Loyola, Maryland. The best swimmers from Catholic schools around the country gathered at the two-day event for intense competition.

Out of the hundreds of swimmers in attendance, Hong was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer for the boys' division.

The honor was well-deserved. The freshman stole first in both the 200 individual medley (1:51.16) and the 100 butterfly (0:52.55). Tyler also combined with Nick Hong, John Libertin, and Cian O'Haimhirgin to take ninth in the 200 medley relay. In the 400 free relay. Tyler raced with Thomas Metz, John Soeder, and  O'Haimhirgin to a 10th place finish.

Outside of the outstanding performance in Maryland, Hong is currently ranked in the top 10 in Ohio in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly and backstroke events.

Already a star in the pool, Tyler has a bright future ahead. In the immediate future, Tyler and the Catfish will face Brunswick at Cleveland State on Friday evening for Senior Night.
