The Junior Varsity Football Wildcats of Coach Paul Yappel improve to 6-1 with a 14-2 victory over Archbishop Moeller's Jayvees at Otterbein University on Saturday

Presented by Wildcats' outstanding Varsity and Junior Varsity Assistant Coach Jim Cahill '89, with the scoring stats courtesy of Jacob Davis, and composed by this corner of the high school football world.

Here are the highlights from Saturday afternoon's 14-2 victory over the Archbishop Moeller JV Crusaders on Dwight C. Ballenger Field in Otterbein University's Memorial Stadium.

Wildcats sophomore defensive lineman Max Watters applied constant pressure throughout the afternoon, as his presence in the Moeller backfield caused an intentional grounding penalty in the first quarter.

Ever-present sophomore linebacker Michael McNamara had a second quarter fumble recovery on the Moeller 45. The Wildcats' drive stalled, but sophomore linebacker Jack Welcsh came to the fore with an interception to give Saint Ignatius the ball at the Moeller 40-yard line.

Welcsh's effort led to a 40-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Griffin Hanna to sure-handed sophomore wide receiver Henry Cook. Sophomore Rory McConville, Henry's cousin, sent home the extra point kick and the Wildcats led, 7-0,  midway through the second quarter.

Like the Freshmen Football 'Cats (see story from today), Saint Ignatius' Junior Varsity defense was in "bend but don't break" mode on the ensuing Crusader possession.

Sophomore defensive back Merick Hartley made a nice pass break up on fourth down with 1:10 left in the half to give the Wildcats the ball at their own 17.  Two plays later, Hanna found big-play sophomore wide receiver Eric Daugenti down the far sideline for an 80-yard pass completion to the Moeller 3-yard line. One play later, Hanna walked into the end zone over the left side and McConville's extra point put the Wildcats up 14-0 with less than 35 seconds left in the half.

"We were able to move the ball in the second half, but were unable to punch in another touchdown," said Coach Cahill. "The defense did its job by not allowing the Crusaders to score and we took an intentional safety at the end of the game to run the clock out."

Congrats to the JV 'Cats, who will take a 6-1 record and a five-game winning streak into next Saturday's 10 am matchup with St. Xavier's Jayvees on Wasmer Field.
