Curtis' heroic tally came with 1 second remaining.

Heroes are made in trying moments.

A hero was christened on Saturday in Columbus.

The Saint Ignatius soccer squad saw some sizeable stumbling blocks placed in front of them at the home of the Dublin Jerome Celtics. A lengthy bus trip, stoppages of play, and a two-goal deficit faced the Wildcats in the second half.

Amidst the adversity, the Wildcats stormed back and tied the contest with one second left. The hero? Henry Curtis.

The Wildcats entered Saturday night's contest with an 8-2-1 record. The squad's last game resulted in a loss, a 2-0 decision at the hands of the No. 1 team in the state and nation, Olentangy Liberty.

Guided by Head Coach Mike McLaughlin '85, the Soccer Cats regrouped and prepared for the Celtics. The Wildcats showed early fire, notching a number of shots, some on net. However, Jerome carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Celtics started the second half strong, tallying their second goal 10 minutes into the stanza. The hosts could not build on the momentum over the course of the period, though. The referees decided to intervene far too often for the liking of either coach. According to Coach McLaughlin, the game ended with 15 yellow cards distributed to the two teams, a majority doled out to Jerome's coaches and players.

With 15 minutes remaining in the game, the Celtics drew a red card. The Wildcats scored two minutes later on an own goal scramble.

The Wildcats pushed hard for the final 12 minutes, using the man advantage to control the play on offense. Even still, the Celtics kept the score at 2-1.

With 15 seconds remaining, the Wildcats received a throw-in. Upon tossing the ball into play, the Soccer Cats headed the ball towards the net. The ball was flicked to the back post, where Henry Curtis tucked the ball into the net with one second to play.

"It was a crazy game," McLaughlin said. "It was a good result for us on the road."

Thanks to the memorable tie, the Wildcats advance to 4-1-1 on the road, and 8-2-2 overall.

Following Curtis' heroics, the Wildcats will prepare for a quick turnaround. The squad is scheduled to head east to play at University School at 7 p.m.

Brennan's Boys: The JV A Soccer Cats notched a win over the Celtics on Saturday, 5-1. With the victory, the Wildcats are 9-1-1, winners of eight straight.
