Firsts are rare in Major League Baseball. After all, countless games have been played since the league was founded in 1869.

Yet, the Farrells made history happen on Saturday evening.

Luke Farrell '09 recently became a Cincinnati Red. Earlier this season, Luke played for the Royals, making his MLB debut. His father, John, took a leave of absence from his job as manager of the Boston Red Sox to see his son play in his first game.

On Saturday, the Reds and the Red Sox played the second game of a 3-game series. With the Sox leading, 5-0, the Reds opted to send Luke to the mound for the top of the ninth inning.

What followed was special and historic. Luke pitched a scoreless, hitless ninth with his dad, John, watching from the Boston dugout. The occasion, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, marked the first time a pitcher had faced a team managed by his father. Luke also became the first player to face his father's team since Moises Alou played against his dad, Felipe, and the San Francisco Giants in 2004.

"A little added pressure for sure," Luke told MLB.com after the game. "That's the first time we've been on the same field together. You want to do well for your team, obviously, but with your dad right there, you want to do a little bit better."
