Novi, Michigan -  The Freshmen 'Cats now stand 2-2 on the season after they turned away the Freshmen Football Program from Detroit Catholic Central, 22-20, on Saturday.

The Shamrocks' ninth-grade team entered the game on their home turf with a 3-0 record, a mark that saw Catholic Central defeat its three previous opponents by a combined score of 134-20.

Supplying the offense for Coach Gallaway and his savvy staff were wide receiver/defensive back Alec LaSpina off a 7-yard reception and standout tailback Mike Simcak, who found the end zone twice. Coach Gallaway emphasized that LaSpina also contributed to a special-teams effort that featured some solid kickoff and punt returns.

LaSpina and wide receiver/running back/ defensive back Michael Morgan provided the two 2-point conversions and defensive back Emmett Hanna sealed the victory with an interception.

Coach Gallaway said he was very impressed by the fight the 'Cats put forth for four quarters, the continued improvement by the offensive line and the solid effort on defense versus the high-scoring Shamrocks.

Up next for the Freshmen Wildcats is Thursday's game at Bump Taylor Field versus the Freshmen Team from Glenville. The kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 PM.

Note: If you would allow this proud Grandpa, I would like to give a shout out to my grandson, Connor Murphy, who scored two goals for the Geauga Maple Leafs Mite Red ice hockey team on Saturday, helping the Maple Leafs Mite Red to victories over Winterhurst, 5-2, and Mentor, 5-1. The games were played on the ice in the Serpentini Arena at Winterhurst.

Also scoring for the Maple Leafs Mite Red was Carter Chase. Carter's dad, Paul, is a 1996 graduate of Saint Ignatius and the Head Coach of the Maple Leafs Mite Red. Paul Chase has helped develop some of the most outstanding goalies in Saint Ignatius' rich ice hockey history as an assistant coach under Pat O'Rourke '90.
