On a dreary Thursday night, the Saint Ignatius varsity soccer team returned to Wasmer Field for the first time since August 22 to host the Lake Catholic Cougars.

This matchup pitted the young Soccer Cats (14 sophomores) against the veteran Cougars (eight seniors and nine juniors).

The hosts controlled the game early on and did not let their foot off the pedal until the final whistle, giving the Wildcats a commanding 9-0 victory.

Goals were scored by six different Wildcats, with four coming in the first half and the other five in the second.

Sophomore striker Everett Shorey had a strong offensive showing, netting two goals along with many more opportunities. Junior Henry Curtis had two goals as well, weaving his way towards the net with fantastic footwork.

Kyle Healy and Kyle Folds both scored on penalty kicks and Joe Katic buried a shot off the pipe and in.

Sophomore Ian Sugar and senior Kevin Shearer tallied their first goals of the year in what was an offensive show by the Wildcats.

Defensively, Austin Zeleznik had an outstanding performance, pacing up and down the field, letting his presence be known all game. Senior Alex Rohr also played solid on defense in his first game of the season coming off an injury.

Throughout the game, the Wildcats did a phenomenal job at keeping possession of the ball and completing a high percentage of their chances, which lead to a plethora of scoring opportunities.

Sophomore Peter Van Euwen earned himself a clean sheet in net, recording one save.

This youthful Wildcat soccer team showed that they are an offensive juggernaut and can not be bullied around by older teams.

On the JV A side, the Wildcats defeated the Cougars, 5-1.

The Wildcats' next game is this Saturday at 2 p.m. against Mason at beautiful Wasmer Field.
