A former Wildcat is making waves in the hockey world.

Aidan Spellacy '16 has performed well for the Lone Star Brahmas of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) this season, drawing plenty of well-earned attention.

In recognition of his efforts, the Great Lakes Hockey League (GLHL) has named Spellacy the Alumni of the Week.

The Saint Ignatius hockey team, members of the GLHL, won two OHSAA State Ice Hockey Championships in 2014 and 2016 with major contributions from Spellacy.

Spellacy joined the Brahmas after graduation, playing in the NAHL,  the only USA Hockey-sanctioned Tier II Junior league. The NAHL is made up of 24 teams in 12 states from across North America, developing student-athletes aged of 16-20 who hope to advance to collegiate and/or professional hockey.

“He was also humble and a wonderful leader—two qualities any coach at any level would value," Saint Ignatius head coach Patrick O’Rourke said. "I couldn't tell you how many goals he scored for us and I don't care - all I know is, I would go to battle with a guy like that any day of the week.”

Spellacy was named NAHL Bauer South Division Player of the Week Honorable Mention before Christmas break for his efforts. The Brahmas currently stand at first in the South Division with 49 points and a 24-8-1 record.

The former Ice Cat has notched nine points (four goals, five assists) with 39 penalty minutes in 30 games. Two of his lamp-lighters have come on the power play. Spellacy has tallied points in four straight games.

“Aidan is one of the hardest-working players I've ever coached,” O'Rourke said. “He is getting some looks from D1 schools already and I know his coach likes his tenacity.”

Congratulations to Aidan and his family on this honor. We wish the best of luck to Aidan the rest of the season.
