As some enjoyed time off and rest, the Saint Ignatius wrestling squad competed fiercely at the Brecksville Holiday Tournament on Thursday, December 28 and Friday, December 30.

The Wildcats saw many victories at the two-day tournament, taking a respectable 15th out of a 48-team field.

Senior Kaden Russell headlined the effort for the Mat Cats, as the 182-pounder advanced to the final, winning the semifinal match by pin. Russell dropped the final match, notching second place in his weight class.

Aidan Gill enjoyed a stellar tournament as well. The junior took eighth place following an impressive 15-6 victory in the consolation match at 220 pounds.

The return of DJ Huff also stood out as a highlight. The sophomore defeated his Lake Catholic opponent at 132 pounds, 7-6.

Also on Thursday, Michael Drobnick managed an impressive feat, pinning his foe in just eight seconds, only two off the school record of six seconds, set by Kevin Czinger in the 1976-77 season.

The Varsity Gold wrestling squad returns to the mat on Saturday, January 7, as the Wildcats will host Padua and Hoban at Sullivan Gym. The Varsity Blue team will wrestle next at the Independence Double Duals on January 12.
