On a snowy weekend in Northeast Ohio, the Saint Ignatius wrestling team flashed its potential with a bright performance.

Senior Kaden Russell competed in the in Ironman Tournament while the rest of the Mat Cats dominated at the Riverside Rumble, rolling to a first place finish with a 5-0 record.

Russell competed fiercely in the renowned Ironman Tournament at Walsh Jesuit. As assistant coach Art Thomas has said, the Ironman is "widely regarded as the toughest tournament in the country." Russell emerged with a fourth place finish as an individual, with several victories over tough out-of-state opponents.

The Varsity Blue wrestling squad competed just as toughly in the Riverside Rumble in Painesville. The Wildcats defeated all five opposing teams, giving the Mat Cats a 5-0 record to start off the season.

Matt Whipkey, Anthony Delsanter, Patrick McGraw, and Zach Tomford all took first in their respective weight classes. Delsanter also received an additional award for pinning each of his opponents in the first period.

Johnny Novak and Josh Dinya notched second place finishes for the Wildcats. Patrick Francis, Tommy Gallaghar, and Logan Toth each took fourth place.

The Mat Cats return to action this week on Wednesday, as the Varsity Blue team will face Valley Forge and Akron Garfield on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Parma Heights.

On Saturday, the Varsity Gold and JV squads will host Madison and Strongsville at noon at Sullivan Gymnasium.
