Eitel ratings getting more interesting

With two weeks remaining in the regular season, computer playoff ratings guru Joe Eitel lists six of the top eight teams in Region 1 as controlling their own destiny in terms of securing a playoff spot.

Those teams are St. Edward, which moved into the top position in the region, Saint Ignatius, which is No. 2, Willoughby South (3rd), North Royalton (4th), Warren G. Harding (5th) and Mentor (6th). Austintown Fitch and North Olmsted are seventh and eighth, respectively.

Under the OHSAA Harbin football playoff system, the top eight teams in each of the state's 24 regions at the end of the regular season qualify for the playoffs and the top four in each region are awarded a home game in the regional-quarterfinal round.

For those Saint Ignatius fans who are wondering why the undefeated Wildcats are now second in Region 1 to unbeaten St. Edward, keep in mind that under the Harbin system teams are awarded points for each game they win and each game a defeated opponent wins, the all-important second-level points. The 'Cats didn't get any second-level help from St. Francis, which is 0-7, while St. Edward had a win over a quality St. Xavier program.

Saint Ignatius has to go out these next two weeks and, as the Eitel ratings pointed out, control its own destiny in the playoff positioning in Region 1. The Wildcats travel to St. Xavier on Saturday for a 2 p.m. kickoff and then host St. Edward in the regular-season finale on Oct. 27 in Byers Field. The kick off will be 7 p.m.

The official OHSAA regional computer ratings will be released on Tuesday.
