JV 'Cats are also tourney champs.

Saint Ignatius' varsity hockey team capped a great start to a new season by defeating highly regarded Toledo St. John's Jesuit, 3-2, in Sunday's championship game of the annual DiPaolo Memorial Tournament on the campus of Miami of Ohio University in Oxford.

In defeating the Titans, who were picked by many as the preseason favorite to win states, the Wildcats improved to 4-0 on the young season. All four of those victories came in the DiPaolo Memorial Tournament, as Saint Ignatius outscored its opponents, 20-6.

Providing the Sunday lamp lighters for the 'Cats were senior forward and captain Miles McQuinn, Nick Gajkowski and Beck Schultz. Senior Bernie Cook was in net for the win and is now 2-0 in his two starts. Bernie had 17 saves.

Saint Ignatius scored all of its goals in the first period and the Titans struck twice in the second period.

Wildcats head coach Pat O'Rourke described the triumph over the Titans as "a quality win."

*And congratulations also goes out to Saint Ignatius' junior-varsity team, which brought home a tournament championship from Oxford by defeating the Titans' jayvees, 5-1, in the title game. The JV 'Cats went 3-0-1 over the weekend.

*Just a reminder that the varsity Ice Cats will take on the Walsh Jesuit Warriors in the home opener on Friday night in Brooklyn's John M. Coyne Recreation Center, a.k.a. "The Big Barn on Memphis." The puck is scheduled to drop at 8, so bring a date. If you can't make it to scenic Brooklyn on Friday night, check out the live broadcast over the S-I-B-N!
