Congratulations go out to junior offensive tackle Jim Byrne, junior kicker Matt Colella, senior tailback Tim McVey, senior defensive end Kevin Kavalec, senior offensive guard Mike Cray and junior linebacker Kyle Berger, who were selected to the 2012 Associated Press Division I All-Ohio High School Football Team.

Byrne has his college recruiting list down to the unbeaten and national-title game bound Fighting Irish from the University of Notre Dame and the undefeated Buckeyes from The Ohio State University. Colella's selection marks the second consecutive year the Wildcats had an AP All-Ohio kicker, as Tim Shenk (now at the Air Force) received the honor last season.

McVey, a Buffalo recruit, and Kavalec, who committed to Boston College in the summer, garnered All-Ohio honors for the second consecutive season. Cray was a two-year mainstay and a 2012 captain for Coach Chuck Kyle '69 and Berger, an exceptional athlete from the outside backer position, has recevied offer interest from Ohio State, West Virginia, Cincinnati and Illinois. And the list will be growing.

Byrne and Colella were first-team picks throughout the state, McVey and Kavalec were chosen for the second team, and Cray and Berger were named to the third team. McVey joins his brother Scott '10 as a two-time AP All-Ohioan.

While being named to any of the AP's three teams in Ohio is a great honor, this old-timer has to say that he didn't see a better running back in all of Northeast Ohio than McVey. And I saw all of the highly touted Northeast Ohio backs, either in person or in televised games. The bigger the game, the better Tim was. And when the opponent was overmatched, Tim was out of the lineup early - twice after one quarter, once after less than a half and twice after less than three quarters.

Despite that, McVey rushed for 1,699 yards this fall and scored a single-season school record 39 touchdowns. He also finished with a school-record 61 career touchdowns. Those touchdown marks broke the records held by former two-time AP All-Ohioan Eric Haddad, who played from 1991 through 1993. Tim scored a school-best 7 first-half touchdowns in a 56-0 regional-semifinal victory over North Royalton and the OHSAA said it will be adding that mark to its record books. North Royalton was coming off a regional-quarterfinal victory over previously unbeaten Willoughby South at South.

COMING UP TUESDAY MORNING - THE CORNER'S 2012-13 VARSITY BASKETBALL PREVIEW.

COMING UP WEDNESDAY - THE CORNER'S 2012-13 VARSITY WRESTLING AND VARSITY SWIMMING AND DIVING PREVIEWS.

MARK THE CALENDAR - Former Wildcats two-time All-Ohio football safety Mike Svetina, who saw significant playing time as a true freshman for the Fighting Illini of Illinois this fall, will be in Sullivan Gymnasium on Dec. 29 to offically receive Saint Ignatius' prestigious John J. Wirtz Athlete of the Year Award for 2011-12.

AND FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE INQUIRED - Saint Ignatius currently has five open dates for the 2013 varsity football season. The only secured games right now are Week 2 at Mentor, Weeks 3 and 4 against Erie (Pa.) schools Strong Vincent and McDowell at Byers Field, Week 9 versus St. Xavier (probably at John Carroll ) and Week 10 vs. St. Edward at atmosphere- and tradition-rich Lakewood Stadium.

Hope remains eternal that Glenville will resign. Stay tuned.
