As we reported on the corner Monday night, the Saint Ignatius Wildcats varsity football program has five open dates to fill for the 2013 season - Weeks 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8. As of now, the Wildcats have five secured games - at Mentor Week 2, versus Strong Vincent and McDowell at Byers Field in Weeks 3 and 4, versus St. Xavier at John Carroll in Week 9 and versus St. Edward at Lakewood Stadium in Week 10.

Cardinal Mooney, De La Salle, John Adams and St. Francis are not interested in re-signing and the prospects of continuing the series with Glenville are not looking good, as the Tarblooders are now talking about signing on with another team for 2013. That's the price you pay for success and recently the Wildcats have enjoyed it on all levels against Glenville.

However, Saint Ignatius Athletics Director Rory Fitzpatrick '88 said he is in discussion with Indianapolis power Warren Central for a possible Week 8 game, so stay tuned on that. Of course even if a game aganst Warren Central becomes a reality, that will still leave four open dates.

Coach Mattison in the house: Visiting Saint Ignatius on Tuesday was the University of Michigan's Defensive Coordinator Greg Mattison. Coach Mattison met briefly with Wildcats All-Ohio junior linebacker Kyle Berger (Kyle was on his way to basketball practice) and then sat down and talked with 'Cats All-Ohio junior offensive lineman Jim Byrne. As we reported on the corner, Jim says his college recruiting list is down to Notre Dame and Ohio State. But since Jim can't offically sign a national letter of intent until February of 2014, coaches from other major schools across the nation are going to keep pitching.

Hillsdale (Mich.) College was also visiting with players at Saint Ignatius on Tuesday, including senior offensive tackle Mike Bigach and senior middle linebacker Nick Chapek.
