There is a buffet of winter sports for Saint Ignatius' faithful to enjoy this weekend, with events in bowling, hockey, wrestling and swimming and diving.

Coach Pat O'Rourke's varsity hockey team, which is off to a 4-0 start, will take the ice at the John M. Coyne Recreation Center on Friday night for its home opener against the Walsh Jesuit Warriors. The puck is scheduled to drop in "The Big Barn on Memphis" at 8 p.m.

Saint Ignatius' Student Broadcasting Network will provide coverage on the Warriors-Wildcats faceoff with John Fanta '13 as your pre-game, intermission and post-game host. The play-by-play will be provided by the savvy Trent Kennedy '13 and adding their astute analysis will be Scott Geyman '13 and Sean Reynolds '13. The pre-game will begin at 7:50 over the SIBN. The corner will also be on hand in the "Big Barn" for game coverage.

On Saturday, the Ice Cats travel to Mercyhurst to face Buffalo Canisius at 5:30 p.m.

Coach Mark Sullivan's varsity wrestling team, which is previewed in a corner feature below, begins a very promising 2012-13 season at the tradition-rich Solon Comet Classic this weekend. Wrestling begins at 4:30 on Friday and Saturday's action gets under way at 10 a.m.

The varsity swimming and diving team, coming off its fifth-place finish at last season's state meet, is slated to swim against Benedictine on Friday night at Hathaway Brown and will be competing in the Solon Relays on Saturday. For Coach Jeff Ridler's outlook on this year's team, see the swimming and diving feature below.

Coach John Kastanis' bowling team will be knocking 'em down against Olmsted Falls on Saturday at Cloverleaf Lanes, as the Alley Cats currently stand 1-1 on the season.

And just another reminder that Coach Sean O'Toole's varsity basketball team, ranked second in The Plain Dealer's Top 25 preseason poll, will begin its season on Dec. 8 against 12th-ranked John Hay in Sullivan Gymnasium. The JV tipoff will be at 6, with the varsity game to follow.
