Saint Ignatius, just a few hours after being ranked with Toledo St. John’s Jesuit as the top teams in the coaches’ state
hockey poll, skated to a 1-1 tie against 10th-ranked Lake Catholic in a Red North West Division match up in Lake County on Wednesday night.

The Wildcats, who had defeated Lake Catholic, 7-1, in the Miami of Ohio University DiPaolo Memorial Tournament over
Thanksgiving Weekend, found themselves trailing, 1-0, until junior forward Beck Schultz knotted the score with 8:30 left.

Troy MacMullan had given Lake Catholic (4-5-2) the lead in the second period of what was another physical encounter between the ‘Cats and the Cougars.

Despite Schultz’s goal, Lake Catholic Goalie Charlie Denner was outstanding and resilient (35 saves), as he fought off a
third period that saw Saint Ignatius outshoot the Cougars, 15-10.

The Wildcats had power play opportunities throughout the final 15 minutes, but Lake Catholic was able to fight off a 5-3 advantage for Saint Ignatius in the late stages.

The Ice Cats will have to put this one behind them and gear up for Friday's game with St. John's Jesuit in the Padua Holiday Tournament at IceLand USA in Strongsville. The puck will drop at 5 p.m.

Friday's game will mark the second meeting between the Wildcats and the Titans in less than a month.

Saint Ignatius defeated St. John's, 3-2, in the championship game of the DiPaolo Memorial Tournament. The Ice Cats started fast that Sunday morning and then had to hold off a charge by the Titans.
