As we hinted to in our coverage of Saturday night's game against Villa Angela-St. Joseph, Coach Sean O'Toole's Saint Ignatius Wildcats did indeed take over the top spot in The Plain Dealer's Top 25 seven-county basketball poll. And deservingly so.
The Wildcats (16-3), who will take their skills to the floor at Quicken Loans Arena on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. tip off versus John Adams, are followed in The PD's top five by VASJ, St. Edward, Shaker Heights and Mentor.
****And, in the final Associated Press Division I state poll for the season, Saint Ignatius moved up a notch to seventh place. The poll is based on the voting by a statewide panel of sports writers and broadcasters.
Mentor finished eighth in Division I and Shaker Heights and St. Edward wound up in a tie for 12th place. Columbus Northland wrapped up the big-school poll championship with a 22-0 regular-season record.
