Brooklyn, Ohio - Before some fans were able to get a second sip of their coffee or hot chocolate, it was evident that everyone from Saint Ignatius and Avon Lake were going home early on Monday night.

Coach Pat O'Rourke's top-seeded Wildcats, scoring often and almost willingly, went on to a 13-0 victory over the Shoremen in Monday's OHSAA Brooklyn District hockey game at the John M. Coyne Recreation Center.

After Saint Ignatius' gifted center and captain Miles McQuinn scored his team's sixth goal 7 minutes and 59 seconds into the first period, the running clock came into play.

Senior defenseman and assistant captain Joe Malone made it 7-0 when he scored off assists from McQuinn and sophomore wing Kevin Yarcusko, and following a very brief intermission, the Wildcats added six more goals before everyone called it a night.

Coach O'Rourke '90 emphasized that he wanted to keep it classy as far as the final score was concerned, but the fact is his Wildcats don't have a line that isn't talented and experienced.

"Everything we put out there was pretty good," Coach O'Rourke said.

Sophomore forward Matty Geither got the barrage started with the first of his two goals just 1 minute and 7 seconds into the game. Geither's lamp lighter came off an assist from fellow sophomore forward Ethan Whitney.

McQuinn, who also finished with two lamplighters, scored the game's second goal off an assist from junior wing Riley Ellis. Closing out the first period scoring were Whitney, junior defenseman Logan Sellers, who went unassisted for his first goal of the season, junior defenseman Harry Smith, who tallied off assists from McQuinn and junior forward Beck Schultz, and the above-mentioned goals by McQuinn and Malone. Miles now has 34 goals on the season.

The Ice Cats (28-5-3), who will face the Collin Lester-led Elyria Catholic Panthers in their second tournament game on Saturday at high noon in the Coyne Recreation Center, applied the finishing touches on a six-bagger.

The final total of 13 goals resulted from the Danny Brogan-Jared Stepka combo, a power-play effort from sophomore Jack Wiegandt that was courtesy of assists from McQuinn and Schultz, an Ellis lamplighter off helpers from McQuinn and Smith, a Geither back-hander from the slot off assists from Whitney and Wiegandt, a Schultz tally and a Yarcusko closing act that came off assists from Ellis and Stepka.

"The best thing is to play it straight up and the running clock is good," Coach O'Rourke said, emphasizing that you don't want to embarrass an opponent by not trying to score, especially early on. "We were trying to work out some new things that we had worked on in practice and it turned out well."

Saint Ignatius senior goalie Sean Williams saw just one shot. Avon Lake wrapped up its season at 3-26.
