Brooklyn, Ohio - Saint Ignatius Head Basketball Coach Sean O'Toole '87 garners Coach of the Year Honors and gifted senior guard Francisco Santiago is selected as the big-school Player of the Year on the 2012-13 Associated Press Division I All-Northeast Lakes District Basketball Team, which was released on Monday night.

Joining "Cisco" on the AP's first team is Wildcats standout senior post/forward Derek Sloan and receiving Special Mention were senior post Alec Papesch, junior post Eric Black and junior guard Kyle Berger.

Coach O'Toole, who has guided his Wildcats to a 20-3 record, including a school-best 19 regular season wins, and a spot in the district semifinals against Cleveland Heights on Wednesday night (see the corner's preview below), has a career mark at his alma mater of 86-29.

Currently in his fifth season at Saint Ignatius, Sean has guided the Wildcats to the No. 1 ranking in The Plain Dealer's Top 25 seven-county poll, a seventh-place ranking in the Associated Press Division I state poll and the No. 1 seed at the demanding Solon District. Coach O'Toole was a standout in basketball for his alma mater in the late 1980s.

Santiago and Sloan are one of the most effective and complementary 1-2 punches in Northeast Ohio, if not the entire state. They averaged 16 and 15 points, respectively, during a regular season that featured a who's who schedule and have provided invaluable leadership in joining junior point guard Danny Bova as Coach O'Toole's tri-captains.

"Cisco," as Santiago is known to his teammates and coaches, is an adept perimeter shooter, can score off the dribble and plays with passion at both ends of the floor. Sloan, who joined Santiago and Papesch as district honorees last season, is a skilled player down low, on the perimeter and in transition. Derek is also one of the premier shot blockers in the district.

Congratulations from the corner to Coach O'Toole, who this old-timer had the privilege to report on during Sean's playing days, and to "Cisco," Derek, Eric, Alec and Kyle.
