For those who listened to the corner during Saturday's guest appearance on the Saint Ignatius Student Broadcasting Network, yes, what I spoke of concerning the 2013 Wildcats varsity football season could become a reality.

As we reported on the corner all winter, Saint Ignatius currently has eight games scheduled for the 2013 season, the amount you must have to be eligible for the OHSAA playoffs.

The open dates are weeks seven and eight, and Wildcats Athletic Director Rory Fitzpatrick '88 has calls in all over the country trying secure at least a ninth game, and possibly a 10th.

As I said in my interview, if Saint Ignatius is unable to secure another game, a scenario could take place in which the Wildcats and West Side rival St. Edward would move their Week 10 game to Week 8 at Lakewood Stadium. Rory said St. Edward also has an open date for Week 8.

This way the Wildcats would not have two open dates in a row, which no coach wants.

Again, Saint Ignatius currently has the first six weeks filled for 2013, open dates Weeks 7 and 8, and St. Xavier and St. Edward scheduled for Weeks 9 and 10. Rory confirmed that moving the St. Edward game up two weeks is a strong possibility. To look at Saint Ignatius' current schedule, you can go to www.ignatius.edu, click on athletics and click on football.

Of course, if either the Wildcats or the Eagles secure other games, the rivalry game would remain Week 10.

To those who e-mailed the corner today and inquired, yes, the OHSAA computer playoff system does factor in an average for open dates. You can go to ohsaa.org and click on football to read how the complete OHSAA Harbin system works.

And to those who asked why it is so difficult to secure games this year when Saint Ignatius was able to fill open dates in the past, those open dates in the past were early in the season. By Weeks 7 and 8, a majority of teams across the country are locked into league or conference games.
