The school year is winding down, which means it is time for the real nitty-gritty in Saint Ignatius' spring sports.

Here is the corner's weekly look at where the 'Cats will be competing as they gear up for the all-important postseason.

Baseball: As is always the case on the high school level, Coach Brad Ganor's Wildcats will be balancing regular season games with sectional and district play.

On Monday, the Wildcats, winners of 13 of their past 14 games, will host Canton Central Catholic at Baldwin Wallace University. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Baldwin Wallace will be the 'Cats' home all week, as North Ridgeville comes calling on Wednesday at 4:30. Friday, Saint Ignatius (18-6), the second seed at the OHSAA Strongsville sectional/district, will play a sectional final game at BW. The 4:30 first pitch will match the Wildcats against the winner of Thursday's sectional semifinal between the Rhodes Rams and the Berea Braves.

Tennis: Coach Jon Barker reports that his gifted team will be competing in the ongoing "Coaches Cup Team Tournament" on Monday against Walsh Jesuit. Play begins at "approximately" 4:30 on the courts at Magnificat.

On Tuesday and Saturday, it is OHSAA sectional play at Oberlin College's Don Husinger's Tennis Courts. Here are the bracket matches involving the Wildcats (again, according to the OHSAA). In a Bracket 1, Round 2 match, Nate Griffin, seeded No. 1, will face the winner of the match between Christian Kovacevic of Valley Forge and Quinn Miller of Amherst Steele. Sean Frebes, seeded fourth, will play the winner of the match between Brandon Blanchard of Valley Forge and Daniel Martinez of John Marshall in Bracket 2, Round 2 action, and in Bracket 4, Round 1, Karl Fehn faces Jacque Elama of John Marshall.

In doubles play, the top-seeded duo of Christian Zuber and Yaw Boakye takes on the winner of the match between Dan Murphy and Kurt Cicirella of Valley Forge vs. John Scalli and Jordan Kneisel of Amherst Steele. Nick Siciliano and Bob Kirchner, seeded third, will face the winner of the doubles match between Adam Sychia and Michael Ciavarella of Normandy vs. Willie Karp and Mike Anguilano of Berea.

Lacrosse: Coach Pat McManamon's team puts a -30- on the regular season with two home games on Wasmer Field - Wednesday night at 7:30 vs. Medina and Saturday night at 7 vs. St. Edward. The 12-1 Lax 'Cats have won six in a row.

Track and Field: With the Lakewood District looming (May 22 and 24), Coach Chuck Kyle's team will host the Olympic Challenge Meet on Friday at 4 in Wasmer Field.

Crew: After an impressive second place-effort at the Midwest Championships, Coach Pat Connor's Crew 'Cats take on Saturday's Cleveland Challenge.

Rugby: According to the Saint Ignatius Athletics Schedule Page, the Rugby 'Cats will begin regional quarter-final play on Saturday at a time and a site to be announced.

Volleyball: Coach Casey Marcelo's team, again according to the Athletics' schedule page, will take a 14-4 record into Saturday's regional-final match up with Hudson at Medina High School. The action is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The Wildcats garnered the region's top seeding.
