Saint Ignatius' standout singles player Nate Griffin was defeated by Cloverleaf's outstanding player Jacob Dunbar, 6-2, 6-1, in the final day of the OHSAA Division I District Tennis Tournament at Oberlin College.

In the third-place match, Nate was leading Massillon Jackson freshman Joey Thomas, 3-2, when Thomas had to withdraw because of an injury to his back. Nate is awarded third place and Thomas, if he is able to recover, will get the fourth qualifying spot.

The top six singles players and doubles teams at Oberlin qualified for next week's state tournament, which will be played on Friday and Saturday on the Varsity Tennis Courts at The Ohio State University. A sophomore, Nate will be competing at state for the second consecutive year.

RUGBY: Penalties, especially ill-timed ones, were a major deterrent for the Saint Ignatius Wildcats down the stretch, as Coach Dan Arbeznik's Rugby program completed an outstanding first season as a varsity sport with a tough 22-13 loss to St. Edward in a state semifinal match up at Hudson High School on Saturday night.

The Eagles, who are 8-0 against the Wildcats in postseason encounters, advance to next week's state championship game against Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller.

A tip of the corner's cap goes out to the Saint Ignatius Student Broadcasting Network for the great job it did in bringing the game to the Wildcats' faithful.
