Saint Ignatius' outstanding senior student athlete Kevin Kavalec racked up a personal-best effort of 182-10 in the finals of the discus competition at the first night of the demanding OHSAA Division I Amherst regional.

A two-time All-Ohio defensive end in football, Kevin will be furthering his education and football career at Boston College. He and the rest of the Class of 2013 will be graduating on Sunday.

St. Edward's nationally recognized thrower Aaron Zedella, an Ohio State recruit, took first place with a throw of 190-08.

Coach Chuck Kyle's 4x100 meter relay team of Enzo Cannata, Pat Jeffries, Dan Way and James Norris ran the best time in Wednesday night's qualifying prelims - 42.61.

In the finals of the 4x800 meter relay, Saint Ignatius' team of Luke Wagner, Joe Arquillo, Vince Bartram and Jack Miller finished fifth for 4 team points. The time was 8:00.46. That is how demanding the Amherst regional is, year in and year out.

Norris, one of the Wildcats' gifted freshman, qualified for Friday's finals in both the 100 meter dash (10.66) and the 200 meter dash (22.39). St. Edward's standout senior sprinter Anthony Young captured both prelims, running a 10.49 100 and 21.46 200. Young is Ohio's two-time defending state champ in the 200.

Jeffries, a senior who brings tremendous heart and versatility to Coach Kyle's team, qualified for Friday's finals in the 300 meter hurdles in a time of 39.67.

In two other finals events, Pat Politowicz was 10th in the pole vault and Mike Schafer placed 14th in the long jump.

After the first night, the standings show Medina with 19 points, Findlay with 18, Midpark with 15, St. Edward and Toledo St. Francis each with 14, Saint Ignatius with 12 and Toledo Whitmer with 11.

Competition resumes on Friday at 4:30 PM.
