Congratulations from the corner go out to Saint Ignatius' gifted and gritty 4x100 meter relay team, which followed up on Wednesday's strong prelim (see the corner's post from Wednesday night) by taking first place in Friday night's finals of the tradition-rich and oh so demanding Amherst Division I OHSAA Regional Track and Field Meet. The winning time was 42.42.

The 4x100 team, which will help lead Coach Chuck Kyle's Wildcats into next weekend's 106th Ohio Track and Field Championships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University, consists of junior Enzo Cannata, versatile seniors Pat Jeffries and Dan Way, and one of the top freshman in Ohio, James Norris.

Way, wearing his lucky wine and gold Cavaliers jersey at school on Friday, predicted a triumph for the 4x100 team.

For a look at senior Kevin Kavalec's outstanding state-qualifying effort in the discus (a PR of 182-10), also check the corner's post from Wednesday night. Friday night, Kevin placed third in the finals of the shot put competition with a throw of 57-11.

As expected, defending big-school state champion St. Edward captured the Amherst regional championship with 96 points. Saint Ignatius was second with 57 points. St. Edward took home six events and placed second in four others. The Eagles' impressive foursome again showed the way - Steele Wasik in both hurdles, Aaron Zedella in both throws, Shaun Crawford in the 100 meter dash and Anthony Young in the 200 meter dash.

The other highlights for the 'Cats on a wet night in Amherst were freshman Luke Wagner's second-place effort in the 1600 meter run, seniors Jack Miller and Joe Arquillo turning in a 3-4 finish in the 3200 meter run, James Norris placing fifth in both the 100 meter dash (10.86) and the 200 meter dash (22.19), and Jeffries and junior Mike Zupan scoring in the 300 meter hurdles and the high jump, respectively.

All of the best to the Wildcats at state on June 7 and 8.
