Along with our camp report, the corner will take a look Saint Ignatius' preseason schedule, the Wildcats' opening day opponent - Michigan's tradition-rich Brother Rice - and Kyle Berger's 7-on-7 efforts at "The Opening."

Ohio City - It's a summer ritual on Wasmer Field that leaves the coaches smiling and a few of the Wildcats questioning the hand-held timing.

Yes, Tuesday evening's version of the varsity 40-yard dash, which seems to always take place during the fourth mini camp, was, as always, extremely competitive.

Senior cornerback Scott Arthrell, who cracked Coach Chuck Kyle's starting lineup last season, opened some eyes with times of 4.3 and 4.5 in his two 40-yard efforts.

Senior outside linebacker Patrick Hopkins, who, if you will excuse the expression, has been working his butt off, ran a 4.7 and came back with a 4.5 on his second attempt.

We're going to stick to some of the veterans when discussing these times, as an entire list would leave all of us as leading candidates for a Visine Advanced commercial.

Senior wideout and captain Jack Hyland, senior wideout Jake Helton and senior wideout/defensive back Jack Lavelle turned in times of 4.6, gifted senior wideouts Mike Siragusa and Nick Fabian each ran a 4.5, as did tough and versatile senior safety Matt McVey, senior tailback Enzo Cannata and senior defensive back Ryan Cooper. Enzo was a key member of Saint Ignatius' state-qualifying 4x100 relay team.

There were an abundance of other efforts that resulted in a 4.6 or a 4.7, but the corner is going wrap up the 40 report by throwing a shout out to some of the "big men" and one of the promising sophomores.

Senior offensive tackles Ryan Dadich and Jim Byrne turned in 5.1 and 5.2 efforts, respectively, and senior defensive lineman Chris Keane was clocked at 5.0. Byrne is a University of Notre Dame recruit and one of Coach Kyle's captains.

Gifted sophomore tailback James Norris, who emerged on Northeast Ohio's varsity track scene this spring as an outstanding freshman sprinter and relay competitor, ran a 4.35 40 on Tuesday.

Mid-season form: Wildcats outstanding senior place kicker Matt Colella was flirting with Lorain Avenue on Tuesday evening with successful field goal attempts from 56 and 51 yards out.

Matt has already attended kicking camps at Penn, Brown, Harvard and Holy Cross this young summer.

Case for the defense and the offense: The 'Cats' defense turned in its strong moments on Tuesday, with senior middle linebacker John Gibbons standing out in drills and senior safety/linebacker Dameon Willis Jr. coming up with a perfect-timing interception during the 7-on-7 competition.

That said, the high grade for the evening would have to go to the offense as the quarterbacks of Coaches Nick Restifo and Elvis Grbac stood out on both levels - varsity and junior varsity.

As for the varsity QBs, junior Jake Kucia threw some nice passes off heady decisions that drew compliments from Coach Restifo and Coach Grbac, and senior John "The Gunslinger" Thomas fired some impressive deep balls through the blue-gray and clouds-of-all-variety sky that hovered over storied Wasmer Field.

As for the jayvee signal-callers, sophomore Dennis Grosel displayed a powerful arm on deep sideline-route throws to Jack Cook and Tyler Musbach, and sophomore David Welcsh made some savvy decisions on several of his tosses. Musbach deserves accolades for his effort off the deep route, as he made a nice two-handed leaping catch.

The good hands club: Showing the way for the varsity receivers with impressive grabs were Siragusa, Helton and senior wideout/tight end Bennett Kinzel.

"Fish" in the house: Saint Ignatius football, basketball and lacrosse standout Bryan Fisher '13 was at practice on Tuesday. "Fish," who was coming off his summer job at a boat and speed skating facility in The Flats, will be attending Miami of Ohio University, where he plans to compete in club basketball and club lacrosse.

Leading by example: Coach Kyle, while closing out Tuesday's camp, put an emphasis on conditioning by saying that "mistakes happen when you are out of shape."

Now in his 31st season as the head football coach at his alma mater, Coach Kyle no sooner got those words out of his mouth before his seniors led the team in numerous post-camp sprints of 100, 50 and 20 yards.

'Cats preseason slate: Saint Ignatius will continue it summer relationship with Solon, Twinsburg and Canton McKinley while preparing for its 2013 season opener against Brother Rice.

The Wildcats will travel to Solon on August 13 for the annual 10 AM practice/drills session with Coach Jim McQuaide's Comets, the Twinsburg Tigers pay a visit to Wasmer Field for an August 16 scrimmage and on August 23, it is the traditional trip to legendary Canton Fawcett Stadium for the Jamboree versus the McKinley Bulldogs. The Jamboree begins at 5 PM with freshman and junior varsity scrimmages, and the varsity match up, which kicks off at 7, will be played under game conditions.

Coach Kyle's 'Cats open their 2013 season on Saturday, August 31 against Brother Rice at Wayne State University. The kick off is 1:30 PM.

For Brother Rice's legendary 80-year-old head coach Al Fracassa, it will be the final season in what has been a five-plus decade coaching career. Coach Fracassa, the all-time winningest coach in the history of Michigan high school football, will be entering his 45th season at Brother Rice. He has led Brother Rice to 416 victories and eight state championships, including back-to-back state crowns in 2011 and 2012.

Brother Rice finished 12-2 en route to Michigan's Division 2 state championship last year. It marked the first time that Brother Rice won back to back titles and the 14th consecutive season that Coach Fracassa's team reached the playoffs. Brother Rice, which returns a solid nucleus from last fall, hasn't had a losing season since 1985.

KYLE BERGER WAS CLOSING AT "THE OPENING": Saint Ignatius' All-Ohio senior outside linebacker Kyle Berger, who has made a verbal to The Ohio State University and has offers from a who's who list of college football programs, including Alabama, made his presence felt during Tuesday's 7-on-7 competition at 'The Opening." The Opening is a prestigious camp of 4- and 5-star athletes in Beaverton, Oregon.

Kyle deflected three passes, including one off a strong drop into coverage on third down and one in the end zone that saw him bat away a potential touchdown.
