The 2013 Saint Ignatius Varsity Golf Preview.

Presented by Head Coach Brian Becker ‘77 and Posted by Eddie Dwyer.

FROM COACH BECKER: After completing four rounds of qualifying to determine the varsity and junior varsity teams, the smoke has still yet to clear, as only 20 total strokes separate 12 players from top to bottom.

Our low qualifier this year was returning senior Jack Coyne with a four-day total of 297. He was followed by fellow senior Dean Catalano at 298.

As I see it, Jack Coyne should be our leader and number one man throughout the season, but he will be challenged by many, including senior returnee PJ Malik, sophomores Harrison Vonderau and Zach Morris and juniors Michael Milam, Michael Maroon and Kevin Duncan.

All in all, we should be a very competitive team that will improve as the season ages on. The roster will include six sophomores, three juniors and three seniors in our top 12, so the future of the program also looks great.

I feel that our overall strength is consistency.

While many players are capable of shooting in the low 70s on any given day, our true strength will be that every player should be under or at 80 on any course that we play, which in my mind makes us a tournament tough team.

NOTE: The Wildcats finished seventh (a score of 320) at last week’s Hudson Explorer Invitational and placed seventh (322) out of 19 teams during Tuesday's Saint Ignatius Invitational at Red Tail Golf Club.

Coach Becker's team is also slated for the Walker Jones Medina Invitational on Wednesday at Sable Creek Golf Club.

In what is a regular season highlight for 2013, the golf teams from Saint Ignatius and St. Edward will be teaming up in Greater Cleveland’s East-West Ryder Cup on Sept. 26 at Beechmont Golf Club.
