Ohio City - Coach Chuck Kyle's varsity and junior varsity football teams, coming off many positive moments during Tuesday's drills/practice sessions with the Solon Comets, went back to their two-a-day practices on Wasmer Field Wednesday in preparation for Friday's scrimmage against the always talented and physical Twinsburg Tigers.

The scrimmage will begin at 10 AM on Wasmer Field.

As for Wednesday's double sessions, the one-on-one match up drill that saw the running backs take on the defensive backs and linebackers was the highlight of the day.

There were some spirited encounters that featured middle linebacker John Gibbons and linebacker/safety Joe Conway going against tailback James Norris and running back Brandon Novak, respectively. Yes, the pads were rattling and even a couple of pancake blocks kissed the Wasmer Field turf.

The QB combo struck again: For the second time this week, sophomore quarterbacks Dennis Grosel and David Welcsh hooked up on a touchdown pass, with Welcsh on the receiving end both times. Grosel also combined with sophomore receiver Ryan Berger on a nice throw and catch off a post pattern that resulted in a touchdown.

Arthrell sets the tone: After doing a solid job of covering Solon's speedy receivers on Tuesday, Saint Ignatius' veteran senior cornerback Scott Arthrell turned right around on Wednesday and played lock-down coverage from the get-go. Versatile senior Jake Maruna also made a case for the defense with an early pick.

Junior quarterback Christian Klink hooked up with junior wide receiver Jaylin McDonald on another TD toss, a play that saw Jaylin make a smooth two-handed grab in stride.

****BUS FOR THE SEASON OPENER: Saint Ignatius has reserved a Fan Bus for the August 31 varsity football opener against Brother Rice. The game kicks off at 1:30 PM at Wayne State University and the bus will depart from Saint Ignatius at 9 AM.
