Saint Ignatius' junior varsity and varsity basketball teams open their seasons in style. Wildcats hockey takes over sole possession of first place in the GLHL with a 3-1 triumph over Walsh Jesuit.

Congratulations go out to Coach Sean O'Toole's varsity basketball team, as the Wildcats traveled to Shaw High School on Saturday and defeated the Cardinals, 71-50, in what was the season opener for Coach O'Toole's 'Cats.

Senior post and captain Eric Black led the way with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Eric was 9-of-14 from the field, including a 3-pointer, and 2-of-3 from the free-throw line.

Gifted sophomore guard Deven Stover supported Eric Black with 10 points, senior captain Danny Bova contributed five assists, four rebounds, four steals and two blocks from his point guard position, and senior post Jake Strippy scored eight points, grabbed four defensive rebounds and blocked two shots.

Leading by 12 points at halftime, the Wildcats took command by outscoring the Cardinals, 22-11, in the third quarter.

Saint Ignatius, which will face John Adams in the home opener on Dec. 14 in Sullivan Gymnasium, shot 56 percent on its 2-point attempts from the field.

The junior varsity Wildcats made themselves at home at Shaw by coming away with a 62-32 triumph over the JV Cardinals. Guard Ryan Berger and forward/post Tim Kiefer each tossed in 11 points.

ICE CATS 3, WALSH JESUIT 1

Coach Pat O'Rourke's team improved to 5-0-2 at the Brooklyn Ice Arena on Saturday night, as senior captain and defenseman Kevin Spellacy opened the scoring in the first period on a shot from the point.

Sophomore forward Jared Stepka added a short-handed goal on a breakaway late in the first period and Walsh Jesuit scored on a deflected shot late in the second period on what was the Warriors' only shot of the period.

Senior defenseman and captain Harry Smith iced it for the 'Cats with an empty net goal in the third period.

Sophomore goalie Wes Deacon saved 12 shots as Coach O'Rourke's team moved into sole possession of first place in the Great Lakes Hockey League.

The Ice Cats return to the Brooklyn Ice Arena tomorrow (Sunday) for a 4:15 GLHL face off with the Padua Bruins.
