HERE IS A NICE UPDATE ON SAINT IGNATIUS’ 2013-14 SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAM FROM A VERY LOYAL SUPPORTER, WITH AN INTRODUCTION FROM THE CORNER.

Although the corner was busy covering junior varsity and varsity basketball at a packed St. Edward High School on Saturday night and doing recaps on varsity hockey, wrestling and bowling from Friday night through most of Sunday night, we did post on Saturday night a final score on the swim meet between Saint Ignatius and St. Edward, won by the Eagles, 99-84. The meet was held at Cleveland State University.

A final score was all that was made available to the corner and this old-timer is not going to resort to plagiarism.

Coach Jeff Ridler’s Wildcats won all but two events during Saturday night’s meet. St. Edward’s depth (grabbing a significant amount of the second, third, etc., spots) and diving strength led to the Eagles’ victory.

It is also worth noting that Dmitri Simcox won the 100 free, not his brother, Peter. Apparently Peter was credited with the victory by another news source.

From Stefanie Christian: Jeff Ridler has coached several elite swimmers at Saint Ignatius over the past few years. Although his squad has been small, they have been mighty, and they have proven their might during championship season. The "Four Horsemen" that made up our record-breaking relays last year and were State Champions in both the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 Freestyle Relay were incredibly exciting to watch and something that doesn't come along every year to a school that has such a small swimming program. Although two of those four young men graduated last year, two of them remain: Peter Simcox and Nathan Christian. The team has a very strong sophomore in Rayon Artis and a powerful freshman class led by Dmitri Simcox and Marcus Hong. There is depth in the freshman class (Severyn Kushmeliuk, Evan Steigerwald, and John Hessler), a new junior (Chris Ubert) who has the potential to develop into a quality distance swimmer, and a couple of dark horses (Jack Hutchinson and Jimmy Rogers) who had beautiful swims Saturday night.

Thank you again,

Stefanie Christian
