Cleveland, Ohio - The corner would like to express its congratulations to Saint Ignatius' outstanding freshmen basketball teams for the talent and desire they displayed during a special Martin Luther King Jr. Day doubleheader sweep over St. Edward in Sullivan Gymnasium.

A tip of the corner's cap also goes out to the dedicated and basketball savvy freshmen coaches - former Wildcat basketball standouts Michael Sweeney '78 and his sons, Conor '08 and Patrick '08, who guide the fortunes of the Gold Team, and to Corey Russell and Kris Kolwicz '01, who coach up the Blue Team. It was a pleasure to introduce myself to Coach Russell, who has a very rich background in athletics.

The Gold Team defeated St. Edward Green, 68-53, and The Blue Team turned the Eagles' Gold away, 59-53.

I apologize to the freshmen coaches, players and scorekeepers for occupying some of their valuable time on Monday, as I did not realize that the games were being covered by Brendan DeVenney. Brendan's story appears on the Basketball Page on the Athletics Website, where the corner's stories used to also be posted.

If you will allow me, I was very impressed with both freshmen teams, as the Gold remains undefeated at 12-0 and the Blue still has just one setback on the season at 10-1.

Among the many Gold Team members who left a lasting impression on this old-timer were Malique Burton (a game-high 18 points), Austen Yarian (13 points), Michael Spear (11 points), Sean Coyne (8 points) and Connor Adams (6 points).

Some of the Blue Team's key performers were Quinton Farren (12 points), Ryan Cook (11 points), Colin Goodfellow (11 points), John Wild (7 points) and Tommy Aris (5 points).

In closing, I would also like to send out a huge "way to go" to the Class of 2017 and the strong contingent that was on hand in Sullivan Gymnasium on Monday giving its Gold and Blue classmates tremendous support.

All of the Best the rest of the season gentlemen. God Bless, Eddie Dwyer.
