The Wildcats defeated then-No. 9 Cleveland Heights on Friday.

Last Friday's win has the Saint Ignatius varsity basketball team soaring up the rankings.

The Wildcats started the season as the No. 25 team in the preseason Cleveland.com rankings, after losing a bevy of seniors to graduation. But a pair of wins over the previous No. 9 and No. 14 teams – Cleveland Heights and Lutheran East – has the experts high on the Cats.

The 2-0 Basketball Cats skyrocketed from No. 25 to No. 9 in this week's rankings, and deservedly so.

Guided by point guard Chase Toppin (28 points) and center Kevin Davet (29 points), the Wildcats have fired out of the gate hot. Hot shooting from the Wildcats' talented cadre of guards has helped greatly, as has the team's all-around solid defensive effort.

The Wildcats have a challenging weekend ahead. No. 13 Garfield Heights hosts Saint Ignatius on Friday at 7:30 pm, and No. 7 Solon visits Sullivan Gym on Saturday at 7 pm.

Last season, the Wildcats defeated the Bulldogs in Sullivan Gym, 72-59, but lost to Comets on the road, 72-54. All-time, the Basketball Cats hold the series advantages vs. Garfield Heights, 6-3, and Solon, 4-3.
