This week's honoree for Student-Athlete wears the number 34 on his jersey.

At Saint Ignatius, it is a special honor to wear 34 on the back of your jersey. Only one student-athlete per sport receives the honor of wearing #34, the jersey number once worn by the late Jim Skerl '74, a man who demonstrated every day how to live as a Christian Man for Others.

This week's recipient has honored the distinction with both his play on the pitch and his achievements in the classroom and the community.

Matthew McLaughlin is this week's Student-Athlete of the Week.

The Soccer Cat has thrived in his junior year at Saint Ignatius. McLaughlin has guided the team to a strong season while maintaining strong grades and participating in service.

McLaughlin's offensive prowess shined in the last week. The midfielder tallied two goals against Toledo St. Francis during a 6-2 home victory on Senior Day on Saturday. The win marked the 600th in program history and the 400th career win for his dad, Coach Mike McLaughlin '85.

Matthew continued his offensive hot streak on Tuesday. In a matchup against the Padua Bruins, McLaughlin notched a hat trick. The junior helped the Wildcats extend the team's winning streak to three and the squad's record to 12-1-2.

On the year, McLaughlin leads the team in points. Through 15 games, he has recorded 12 goals and 14 assists. The Wildcats have one game remaining in the regular season – a road game against Olentangy Liberty in Columbus on Saturday.  Then, the postseason road to a state title will begin.

More importantly than his on-field exploits, McLaughlin performs well off of the field. He excels in the classroom, with an outstanding 4.1 GPA. McLaughlin dedicates much of his free time to service, taking part in Student Senate, the Arimathea Pallbearer Ministry, and the Labre Homeless Ministry.

Congratulations, Matthew, keep up the great work!
