Phil Zuccaro won the 100m dash before he and the Cats headed downtown for Prom.

In the past couple weeks, the Saint Ignatius varsity track and field team has been short-handed, due in part to Easter break and college visits for the Wildcats' multi-sport athletes. This week, the Wildcats had to leave early due to Prom this evening.

Even still, the men of Chuck Kyle '69 posted an impressive effort at the 63rd annual Comet Relays at Marion L. Steele High School in Amherst. The Wildcats took fourth place thanks in part to Phil Zuccaro, Liam McGuire, and the 4x1600 relay team.

As per usual, Zuccaro's fast feet wowed fans and coaches alike. Despite competing against some of the fastest runners in the area, Zuccaro stole first. The senior clocked in at 11.24 for 10 important points for the Wildcats.

Zuccaro also helped out in the 4x100 relay. Connor Kenendy, Luke Griffiths, Dominic Devengencie, and Zuccaro clocked a time of 44.06 for fifth.

Fellow speedster John Wetula did well in the short 110m hurdles, grabbing fifth. The junior scored a time of 15.38 in the finals. Max Pike ran the 300 hurdles for the Cats, finishing ninth in 42.41.

The meet's lengthy races also resulted in big points for the Wildcats, too. Most notably, Liam McGuire ran a 4:24.13 in the 1600, just barely off the top two runners. Coach Kyle called McGuire's efforts "wonderful" following the meet. Brett Saunders then held it down for the men of Ohio City in the 3200m. The senior tabbed a time of 9:48.46, good enough for fifth place.

The 4x1600 relay provided a highlight for the Cats. Nick Saul, Andrew Biehl, Matt Blouch, and McGuire combined for a time of 18:06.91, an "outstanding mark for this time of year," as Coach Kyle commented after the meet.

In the field events, the Wildcats performed solidly, but did not score many points amongst a loaded talent pool. Dan Drellishak repped the Wildcats in the pole vault, tying for sixth with a leap of 12-00.00. Dominic Devengencie (20-00.25) and Andrew Phillips (19-11.25) finished in the top 15 in the long jump. Alex Misencik took sixth in shot put (46-10.00) and ninth in discus (136-06) as other Ring Cats took college visits. Andrew Eicher and Nate Sommerfeld scored sixth and seventh in the high jump (5-09.00).

With no conflicts next weekend, Coach Kyle and the Wildcats hope to be back to full strength next weekend. The squad will begin its push towards May and the postseason with the Titan Kiwanis Relays in Berea next Saturday.
