On a cold afternoon inside Brooklyn Ice Arena in late January, senior Michael McCaffrey was helped off the ice after being on the receiving end of a big hit.

The injury did not look good. McCaffrey soon received the prognosis – a "season-ending" lower body injury.

But McCaffrey refused to allow his season to end that way.

The senior worked tirelessly to rehab and return to the ice. McCaffrey returned to practice last week, with the goal of playing in the District Final vs. St. Edward.

McCaffrey achieved his goal, and helped the Saint Ignatius prep hockey team accomplish its first of two goals – a District Championship.

The team captain tallied two assists in his triumphant return to the ice, playing on a premier line with Bain Kurtz and Aidan Millett. The talented trio helped the Wildcats rush to a 2-0 lead that proved insurmountable for the Eagles.

McCaffrey has served as a mature-beyond-his-years leader for the Wildcats this season, quietly paving the path for a relatively youthful Saint Ignatius squad.

While McCaffrey has missed 11 games this year, the senior still stands first on the team with 25 assists and third on the squad (behind only Bain Kurtz, 45; and Michael Boehm, 37) with 36 points. McCaffrey is tops on the team with 1.385 points per game. McCaffrey's off-ice stats are impressive, too, as he has a 3.10 GPA.

McCaffrey and the Ice Cats are not done, though. The Wildcats will face Dublin Jerome on Friday at 12:30 pm in the State Semifinal at Nationwide Arena.

Congrats to Mike, and good luck to the Ice Cats this weekend!
