Weekend Preview 4/13-4/17: Wildcats Busy on Easter Weekend

While crew, tennis, and volleyball receive the weekend off, there are still plenty of events going on Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday (a.k.a. the Easter Vigil) as the spring sports are in the heart of their seasons.

From the Saint Ignatius Athletic Department to you and yours, we wish all alumni, student-athletes, and the Saint Ignatius Community a very holy and blessed Happy Easter!

BASEBALL

The Varsity Baseball team will try get back on track this weekend, currently sitting at a 2-4 record after tough losses on Monday and Tuesday. The Wildcats will match up with St. Vincent-St. Mary and Strongsville.

On Holy Thursday, the Wildcats host the 5-2 Fighting Irish from St. Vincent-St. Mary at 5:00 p.m. at Baldwin-Wallace University. At the same time, the undefeated, 8-0 Junior Varsity Wildcats head down to Akron at 5 to face the Irish.

On Saturday, it will be a rematch of last year’s District Semifinal as the Wildcats host the Strongsville Mustangs for a tripleheader at Baldwin Wallace University. The 3-2 Freshmen Blue Wildcats face the Mustangs first at 10:00 a.m. at Fisher Field. At noon, it is the JV matchup with Strongsville. And finally at 2:00 p.m., it is the highly anticipated varsity matchup between the Wildcats and Mustangs.

On Monday, Varsity Baseball welcomes the Eagles from St. Mary’s Prep in Orchard Lake, Michigan for a 2:00 p.m. ballgame.

The Saint Ignatius Broadcast Network will have live coverage of the Wildcats and Mustangs on Saturday starting at 1:50. Then the St. Mary’s Prep game will be live on Monday starting at 1:50.

LACROSSE

The 4-2 Lax Cats have a huge matchup ahead for them on Thursday night in Ohio City. Coming to the corner of West 30th and Lorain are the Warriors from Minisink Valley out of Slate Hill, New York.

The Wildcats are coming off a huge win Wednesday night over North Canton Hoover, 7-3. The game was close early after the Vikings took a 2-1 lead. But Brent Chernosky got the Wildcats their first lead at 3-2 in the first quarter, and the visitors would then run away with it. Noah Catanzarite got his second goal in the third to make it 4-2, Riley Kinzel made it 5-2, Anthony Ameo got it to 6-2, and Jack Moriarty finished it off with the Wildcats’ 7th goal.

The SIBN will have live coverage from Wasmer Field on Thursday night at 7:00 between the Wildcats and Warriors.

Also on Thursday, the undefeated 6-0 JV Blue Lacrosse Wildcats head to University School for a 6:00 p.m. matchup with the Preppers.

RUGBY

After suffering their first loss of the season last Saturday at the hands of Gonzaga College, the No. 2 ranked team in the nation, the Wildcats got back to their winning ways with a 48-0 victory over Avon Lake on Wednesday night. They now gear up for an ever bigger matchup with the 3rd ranked team in the nation, Xavier (NY).

The Wildcats will make the trip to State College, Pennsylvania to take on the Knights at Pennsylvania State University at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Xavier recently lost to Gonzaga, losing their No. 1 ranking in the country.

Also making the trip the Pennsylvania will be the 4-1 B-side squad, whose only loss also came to Gonzaga.

TRACK AND FIELD

Head Coach Chuck Kyle’s defending State Champion Track and Field Cats have a big meet coming up this Saturday, as they head down to GlenOak High School to compete in the Second Sole Eagle Elite Invitational.

Last year, the Wildcats won this meet with a 95.5 point performance, beating the second team by 37.5 points.

Running begins at 9:00 a.m. in Canton.

Last week, the Wildcats finished 2nd at the 29th annual Medina Relays.
