Hockey is a team sport, so it seems unfair to choose just one student-athlete of the week, especially considering the success of Saint Ignatius' extraordinary hockey squad.
Thus, this week's student-athlete of the week honor goes to the 2016-17 Saint Ignatius hockey squad.
The Wildcats accomplished feats never before seen in Saint Ignatius hockey history. The squad finished at 29-7-2, claimed its second straight state title, and its fourth straight Cleveland Cup championship. No Cleveland hockey team had ever accomplished the "triple crown" – the league title, league playoff championship, and state title – in back-to-back seasons before the Ice Cats.
The Wildcats' senior class also stands as the winningest in school history. The 11 senior Ice Cats recorded 129 victories in four seasons, a new record, and are one of just seven classes in school history to win three state championships in a sport in four years.
The legacy of these Ice Cats will not soon be forgotten.
Congratulations once again to this special group of young men.
