A record-setting weekend calls for a departure from the norm for the weekly "Student-Athlete of the Week" award.

On Saturday, a 40-year Saint Ignatius wrestling record fell, as two Wildcats recorded 5-second pins, beating the previous record of a 6-second pin by Kevin Czinger in 1977.

As a result, this week's student-athlete honorees are the Mat Cats who set the new record – Kaden Russell and Michael Drobnick.

Near the end of the Wildcats' tri-match with Archbishop Hoban and Padua, Kaden Russell stepped to the mat at 182 pounds. In a supreme feat of athleticism and aggression, Russell rapidly pinned his opponent to the mat with 1:55 on the clock in the first period. The crowd roared with approval at the senior's accomplishment.

Then in the very next match, the 195-pound bout, Michael Drobnick matched Russell's feat with a 5-second pin of his own, grinning towards his teammate after doing so.

As a team, the Mat Cats downed Hoban, 64-14, and Padua, 53-12, on Saturday in Sullivan Gym.

Russell's name will now appear with Drobnick's under the record for fastest pin. The two hope to add their names under the "state champion" column, too. Russell will look to become just the sixth Wildcat to win two state championships during the State Tournament in March.

Drobnick also enjoyed a solid season on the football field, seeing some time at wide receiver. The junior notched 3 catches for 58 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Russell, Drobnick, and the Mat Cats return to action this weekend, as the varsity gold wrestling squad will travel to Otterbein University for the Catholic Invitational Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
