A tip of the corner's cap goes out to junior Michael McCaffrey, who during Monday's Pine Hills state-qualifying District Tournament earned a spot in next week's annual OHSAA State Golf Tournament as one of the top individuals not on a qualifying team.
Michael, honored last week as Saint Ignatius' Student Athlete of the Week, shot a 39 on the front nine and a 36 on the back nine for a round of 75 at Pine Hills. He then pared his playoff hole versus four others players to seal his place in the Division I State Tournament, which will be played on October 21 and 22 at The Ohio State University's Scarlet Course.
As a team, Saint Ignatius shot a 312 and finished just three strokes off the final state-qualifying team score.
The team qualifiers out of Pine Hills were Green (296), Walsh Jesuit (301), Hudson (308), Boardman (308) and Wooster (309).
FROM HEAD COACH BRIAN BECKER '77: The Wildcat Varsity Golf Team turned in a impressive round of 312 at today's District Championships. The team finished 6th, only 3 total team strokes from making the trip back to the state tournament in Columbus.
