The top-seeded United States team, unable to overcome turnovers and penalties, was upset by Canada, 23-17, in Saturday's Gold Medal Game of the International Federation of American Football Under-19 World Championship in Austin, Texas.

Canada, which led, 16-7, early in the third quarter and 23-14 with 5 minutes and 10 seconds remaining to be played, benefited from special teams, a capable running game and two key interceptions in turning back the U.S.

Cincinnati St. Xavier's highly successful head coach Steve Specht directed The United States team, which was the defending World Champion.

In winning the inaugural IFAF Under-19 World Championship in 2009 at Canton's Fawcett Stadium, The United States, coached by Chuck Kyle '69, outscored three opponents, 174-3, en route to the gold medal. Coach Kyle's U.S. team defeated Canada by 38 points in the Gold Medal Game. Coach Specht was an assistant on Coach Kyle's 2009 IFAF staff.
