Coach Chuck Kyle's varsity football team will look to build off last weekend's 31-7 season-opening victory over Youngstown Cardinal Mooney when it faces De La Salle Collegiate High School from Warren, Michigan on Saturday (tomorrow) at Parma's Byers Field. The kickoff on Byers' new turf will be 3 p.m. The Pilots from De La Salle (1-0) are led by one of the nations' highest-rated quarterbacks in University of Michigan 5-Star recruit Shane Morris. Like the Wildcats' Mike LaManna, Morris is a southpaw. The corner took an indepth look at Morris and the Pilots during its Aug. 29th preview on the game (see below).

The Saint Ignatius-De La Salle encounter will be broadcast live over the Saint Ignatius Student Broadcasting Network, with seniors John Fanta and Greg Ziton describing what will also be live SIBN video coverage. Mike Gibbons and Dick Russ will bring you live coverage over WHK-AM 1420 and http://www.thesportsking.com.

*Speaking of John Fanta, several reliable sources informed the corner this past week that John also has an outstanding voice when it comes to singing. John is a member of the Saint Ignatius Chorus and sings during the 8 a.m. Mass every Sunday at his home parsh - St. Bernadettes in Westlake.

John received rave reviews from those in attendance at Friday morning's Mass of the Holy Spirit in the Cathedral of St. John The Baptist. From all accounts, John did a moving rendition of the Sponsorial Salm, "Lord, Send Down Your Spirit."

After opening its season with a victory at the GlenOak Invitational Meet, Dr. Mike Gallagher's cross country team is gearing up for tomorrow's Avon Lake Early Bird Invitational, which will take place on the grounds in Lorain County Community College at 9 a.m.

Coach Brian Becker's varsity golf team, which got its winning swing back this past week, will be competing over the Labor Day Weekend at the Archbishop Hoban Invitational in the storied Firestone Country Club and Coach Mike McLaughlin's varsity soocer team substantiated its top ranking in the area coaches poll by defeating third-ranked Strongsville, 4-1, on Thursday night at the Mustangs' home field (see the corner's game story below).

With the victory over a highly regarded Strongsville team, Coach McLaughlin's 'Cats improved to 5-0 and extended their winning streak to 22 matches. Saint Ignatius, which travels to Shaker Heights on Wednesday, has now won 50 of its past 51 matches.

*UPDATE ON JIM BYRNE: Saint Ignatius' standout junior offensive tackle Jimmy Byrne, a young man who has already received a significant number of college offers, including The Ohio State University and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, will be back practicing on Monday and should be a full go for the Mentor game on Sept. 8 in Byers Field. Jim, who is recovering from a sore knee, said he has been given the OK from his doctor to return to action.

Rounding the corner and getting ready for the first of two back-to-back matchups with who's who signal-callers - Morris and Mentor's outstanding All-Ohio selection and North Carolina recruit, Mitch Trubisky. See you at Byers Field tomorrow.
