The Cats Take the Top Spot at Comet Relays

The Track and Field time is beginning to hit their stride as they impress at the Comet Relays.

AMHERST, Oh - The Track Cats showcased an impressive performance at the Amherst Comet Relays on April 22nd, dominating the competition with multiple first-place finishes and taking home the top prize. The team's success bodes well for the remainder of the season and the upcoming District and Regional meets.

Senior Christian Cupp set a new personal record in the long jump, jumping 22-3.25 feet and securing first place. Jordon Rodman '24 also made an impressive effort, finishing fourth with a 21-3 jump. Junior Greg Hanson secured 11th place in Discus, throwing 126 feet and 10 inches.

The sprinting squad was a force to be reckoned with, as all three relay teams finished first. The 4x100 meter relay team of Nick Hille, Shane Morrison, Jackson Bennett and Brandon Webster broke a meet record, finishing with a time of 42.29. 

The 4x200 team of Ryan Kennedy, Cody Haddad, Christian Cupp and Shane Morrison finished in 1:28.71 setting a new program record in the event. Finally, the 4x400 relay team of Christian Cupp, Samurai Chung, Ryan Kennedy and Ben Showman ran their season-best time of 3:25.98.

In individual sprinting events, Brandon Webster secured sixth place in the 100m dash with a time of 11.09, while Samurai Chung ran the 300m hurdles in 40.86 seconds, earning fifth place.

The distance squad also performed well, with the 4x1600 meter relay team of John Corrigan, Maxwell Friedrich, Peter Spellacy and Aiden Walter. They secured first place with a time of 18:25.23. 

The 4x800 meter relay team of Matthew Muntean, Aidan Zielinski, Evan Richter and John Corrigan also ran their season-best time of 8:10.80, earning second place. The Distance Medley Relay team of Aiden Walter, Evan Richter, Aidan Zielinski and Peter Spellacy ran 11:07.50, finishing in fourth place.

In the individual distance events, Jack Sheppard ran a personal best of 4:38.53 in the 1600m, securing 10th place, while William Nicklas '25 finished in 16th place in the 3200m, running 11:01.51.

Overall, the Saint Ignatius Wildcats earned an impressive 79 points, securing the top spot. The team looks forward to their next meet, the Berea Relays, on April 28th.
