The defensive back and wide receiver will continue his academic and football career in the Ivy League.

OHIO CITY, Oh - Brandon Webster is heading to the Ivy League, continuing his academic and football career at Yale University. The senior defensive back has committed to becoming a Bulldog when he graduates from Saint Ignatius High School in 2023. Webster is an anchor in the Wildcat secondary as a defensive back and will play college football at the Division I level.

“I went to Yale over the summer at a camp and the atmosphere felt amazing,” explains Webster. “The players and coaches were close and it felt like a family, similar to Saint Ignatius. Yale felt like home and that is where I wanted to go.”

In the 2021 season, Webster missed a good chunk of the season due to a lingering injury. When Webster was back to full strength, he was a phenomenal addition to a stacked secondary core. Webster’s potential was shown late in the regular season with great games against Archbishop Moeller and St. Xavier. In the 2021 OHSAA Playoffs, Webster and Sean Martin became a strong duo in the secondary.

Webster’s college commitment comes at a good time, as he’s committed before the start of his senior season. “I can focus on my position, be a better teammate and be a Man For Others,” Webster says. “I want to build a leadership role heading into this season.”

The Wildcats are in the thick of double sessions and Webster’s summer progression has stood out to Associate Head Coach Ryan Franzinger ‘02. “Brandon is communicating well and has taken over the leadership with the defensive backs,” Franzinger says. “He is experienced and intelligent and knows the defense.”

Webster has established himself as the defensive back who will be covering opponents’ number one receiver in the 2022 season and hopes to give the defense a spark. “I’m looking forward to being the best defensive back I can be and making a State Championship run,” Webster explains. “I want to keep showing what I can do and be one of the best defensive backs to come out of Saint Ignatius.”

A good amount of talent graduated in the secondary after the 2021 season, but Webster is impressed with how the core looks ahead of the new season. “We look really good; we have a good mix of young and older guys,” says Webster. “We are blending and seeing who is best at each position. I like the young guys getting reps so they can be ready for game time.”

Webster will play on both sides of the football as a defensive back and wide receiver and Franzinger is confident that Webster will excel in both positions. “He is smart enough to balance each side of the ball,” Franzinger says. “He has been tremendous with his technique this summer which will translate to success in the season.”

Like teammate Will Robinson who recently committed to Holy Cross, Webster will be a Player To Watch for the Wildcats as he will be the senior leader in the secondary for the defense. Webster’s athleticism can help give the Wildcats a needed boost with the strength of the schedule the Cats will play in the 2022 season.
