Varsity Blue and Gold have had a wonderful beginning to the 2021 season as they head to the back half of the regular season.

OHIO CITY, Oh - As the Golf Cats reach the halfway point of their season, they are looking poised and determined for a solid second half.  The top pair of junior Nick Piesen and senior Topher Reed have had strong showings throughout the year.

To begin, Reed shot a school record-tying 66 in the Moeller Invitational at Walden Ponds.  The team captain hopes to continue his hot streak leading into the postseason. Piesen has been Mr. Consistency the whole year.  The junior has had five rounds under par through the eight tournaments so far.  With a scoring average of 70, he has been a strong anchor that the team can depend on when challenging courses.

The Varsity Blue team includes Senior Michael Van Etten, Juniors Connor Malicki and Michael O’Leary, and Sophomores Bradley Chill and Julian Dugan.  Dugan started the season on the Varsity Gold team headed by golf coach Tom Beach. Dugan’s four consecutive rounds under par has moved him up to the Varsity Blue team.  The Varsity Gold team includes seniors: MJ Myers, Connor Keefe, and Domenic Pilla, and Juniors: Ethan Hughes and John Thompson.

Over the past week, the Wildcats have been very active on the golf course.  Last Saturday, the Cats went out to Fowler’s Mill for the Gilmour Academy Invitational.  Head Golf Coach, PJ Myers ’99, decided to switch up the lineups for a Juniors vs. Seniors matchup.  The juniors, led by Piesen(72) and O’Leary (72), shot 299 to prevail over the Senior team.

On Saturday, the team headed down to Windmill Lakes in Ravenna for the University School Invitational.  The Cats battled tough conditions and ended up shooting a 293, which was good enough for second place.  The team was again led by Piesen(69), Chill(71), and Reed(74).  Other scores included: Van Etten(74), Malicki(75), Thompson(75), O’Leary(76), and Keefe(77).

Finally, the Cats headed down to Congress Lake Country Club to face off in the Lake Invitational on Monday.  This course proved to be very difficult with many out-of-bounds hazards and tricky holes.  Senior leader Myers had the breakthrough round he has been looking for all year.  MJ and Connor Malicki led the team with scores of 74.  These scores were good enough for third overall.  With these scores, the Varsity Gold team won the Invitational.

The Cats will be looking ahead to the Kiely Cup and Canterbury Country Club near the middle of the month.  This tournament will be excellent preparation for the State Tournament as all of the top teams throughout Ohio will be in attendance.
