The Wildcats win 68-7 vs. the Toledo Celtics on Saturday at Wasmer Field.

The Wildcats were winners on Saturday with a 68-7 victory over the Toledo Celtics Saturday at Wasmer Field. Martin “Marty” Lenehan got the hat trick on Saturday with three tries for the Wildcats. Jack Dulik came off his record-setting performance last week vs. Avon with two more tries than the Celtics.

Senior captain Fielding Carlson demonstrated a balance of strength and speed to begin the scoring for the Wildcats at the 12-minute mark of the match. That try by Carlson started an avalanche of scoring by the Rugby Cats. At the 15-minute mark, Lenehan scored his first try of the match. Lenehan used his agility with back-to-back cuts that left the Celtics in the dust and allowed Lenehan to get in for the try.

The Celtics get on the scoreboard near the 25-minute mark as they got past a stingy Wildcat defense. This would be the only score for the Toledo offense as the Blue and Gold made their adjustments.

With a little over ten minutes to play before the break, sophomore Patrick Lavelle laid a massive hit on the Celtics, which jarred the ball free. The Wildcats quickly set up their attack and worked out to Bob Voth, who had a wide-open lane for the try, making the score 19-7 Cats.

After another Celtics turnover at the 25-minute mark, Carlson picked up the loose Rugby ball and worked the ball over to a streaking Dulick on the near side of the field. Dulik would scamper in for the score, and the conversion made the score  26-7 Wildcats at the half.

Lenehan opened the second half, scoring at the 36-minute mark picking up the loose ball in a scrum. Lenehan broke away from the Celtics defense and got in for the try, which gave the Wildcats a 31-7 advantage. Lenehan would be a winner of another scrum and take the ball in for his third try at the 47-minute mark to increase the Cats lead to 36-7.

The final try for the Wildcats deserved to be a SportsCenter Top 10 play as Lenehan was involved with a spectacular play for the Blue and Gold. Nearing the 65-minute mark, Lenehan ran about 20-yards up the far sideline, dodging Celtics left and right. As the Celtics finally ran Lenehan down near the 25-yard line, he pitched the ball over to the speedy Dulik, who made a jumping effort for the possession. Dulik would get in for the try and with the conversion, the score was settled at 68-7.

The Wildcats improve to 6-2 on the season and travel to Moose Rugby Grounds in Eikhart, Indiana, for the Midwest’s match-up. The Cats will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 1, taking on the HSE Royals at 11 a.m. and the Royal Irish at 4:30 p.m.
