Wildcats defeat the Avon Eagles 111-0 Friday Night at Wasmer Field.

A record-setting night occurred at Wasmer Field for the Saint Ignatius Rugby Program against the Avon Eagles. The Wildcats shut out the Eagles with an impressive 111-0 victory Friday night. The match saw junior Jack Dulik break the single-game program record for five tries in the match. The previous record was held by four Wildcats who secured four tries in a game: Dan Jamieson ’14 in 2014 vs. St. Xavier, Sean Whalen ’18 in 2017 vs. St. Xavier, Aidan Gill ’18 in 2018 vs. West Shore, and Declan Boldy ’19 in 2019 vs. Brunswick. Dulik set a new record with five.

The record-setting night did not end there for the Wildcats. As a team, the Cats broke a single-game program record with the most tries in the history of Saint Ignatius Rugby with an astounding 17 tries. Senior Robert Voth tied a program record with 13 conversions, matching his former teammate Declan Boldy who set the record against Brunswick in 2019.

Dominate. That is the perfect word to describe the play from the Wildcats Friday night vs. Avon. The Wildcats’ first try came at the three-minute mark of the match, and the Blue and Gold did not look back as that would be the first of many tries on a historic night. Leading 19-0 at the 15th-minute mark, senior Chris Speelman returned a kick-off for a try going 58-yards on the Wasmer turf. Speelman demonstrated his speed giving the Cats a 24-0 advantage.

The Wildcats showed off their team play, working the ball around from Dulik, Voth, and Joseph Georges to end the first half. Georges tip-toed up the sideline and worked back inside for the try as time expired in the first half, making the score 59-0 Wildcats.

Dulik began the second half at the 37th minute with a try which totaled three so far for the junior. Dulik faked out the Eagles defense with a fake pass that opened up room for the try. The Cats would expand their advantage to 64-0.

The Eagles almost got on the board at the 50th-minute mark of the match as they were inside the 20-yard line on Wasmer Field. The Cats stout defense did not allow the Eagles to break in for a try, and they would keep Avon off the board.

Approaching the 60th-minute mark of the match, the Wildcats broke 100 on the scoreboard as senior Fielding Carlson broke away after an Avon turnover. Carlson would finish the contest with three tries on the night.

SIBN Player of the Game: Jack Dulik

After the Carlson try, an individual record would be broken in front of the Wildcat fans. The Wildcats would work the ball around as Voth got it over to the speedy Dulik. Dulik used his speed working up the near sideline, and once there was room, he accelerated. Dulik broke a pair of Eagle ankles working the play back inside on his way to break an individual record in tries.

“We played a real good team match,” says Dulik. “We got everyone involved, which kept us going in the match.”

The game would be called nearing the 65th minute of play, giving the Wildcats a 111-0 win over Avon. The Cats will remain at home for their next contest as they will take on the Toledo Celts at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Wasmer Field. The SIBN will have live coverage of the match. Varsity A is now 5-2 heading into their second half of the 2021 season.
