The Wildcats go 2-0-1 in weekend hockey play as they wrap up the regular season

The season finale for the Wildcats Varsity A squad was some of the best hockey all year. The Ice-Cats opened their weekend up against Toledo St. John's Jesuit. The Cats got off to a strong start early with goals from Erik Galauner, Zach Zahoranski, Christian Nash, Frankie Basile, and Zach Baker to get up 5-0 in Period one. After a quiet period two, Chuckie Wilson and Brandon Getz finished it off as the Cats beat the Titans 7-0.

The Saturday night primetime game was the biggest game of the year up to this point. The Cats, on a six-game winning streak, were facing off against number two St. Francis. Things looked bright early as Chuckie Wilson got the fist punch with an early five-hole goal. The Knights were able to strike back and tie things up before the first intermission. Four minutes in, none other than Chuckie Wilson gave the Cats the lead with a wrap-around goal. Forty seconds into the third-period, Erik Galauner with a flashy finish, finds the net and puts the Cats up 3-1. The dreaded two-goal lead haunts the Cats, and in the last three seconds, St.Francis ties up and sends it to OT. Five minutes of 5-5 action was not enough to decide a winner, so the Cats and The Knights finished tied up at three.

For the last game of the regular season, Sylvania Northview made the Toledo trip to the OBM arena in Strongsville. Northview had already succumbed to the Cats once this year and was hungry for a #10-#4 upset over the Cats. Erik Galauner gave us all Valentine's gift breaking ankles and going seven-hole 30 seconds into the game. A few minutes later, he found Wilson again for the one timer, and the Cats were quickly up 2-0. The game was finished off by a third-period goal from Brandon Getz off a feed from Chuckie Wilson to give the Cats the win 3-2 in the final regular-season game. The Ice-Cats look forward to Monday as they will take on the Brooklyn Hurricanes at 4 p.m. to start the State Tournament in the West District.
