Known for fastidiousness, Head Wrestling Coach Mark Sullivan takes the safety protocols seriously

Coach Sullivan is known to have one of the cleanest rooms in the state, however this year he is taking it to the next level.

If you report early enough to practice you’ll catch “Sully”, as he is called, spraying the lockers, bathrooms, doors, door handles, walls, floors, and all of the wrestling mats with disinfectant. In these challenging times Sully has taken cleanliness to the next level to ensure that the wrestling team has the best possibility of competing this year.

When asked about his intense cleaning ritual, Coach Sullivan will quote one of his former coaches, usually legendary Ohio State Football Coach Woody Hayes or Hall of Fame/Olympic Gold Medalists Wrestling Coach Dan Gable.

“Woody methodically paced practice figuring out protocols to make us safer under all conditions. Woody would spray water on our artificial turf field, he felt the water on the early antiquated turf ( similar to painted cement) would prevent knee injuries. The only problem was in November, the water would freeze. Having a legendary coach taking the time to make us safer is a motivator for me to do the same,” Sullivan said.

After the Holy Name match last Friday night, which kicked off the season for the Cats, Coach Sullivan and Coach Jon Polick met with the team to stress all of the protocols and measures that have been put in place to keep the season running safely and smoothly.

Along with being safe and clean, the coaches are trying to put the team in the best position possible to get on the podium in March. Since many of the athletes lost valuable practice time over the last several months, coaches Sullivan and Polick have put extra emphasis on lifting and on conditioning in order to keep the team in prime shape, ready to compete whenever given the opportunity.
